Job Summary

The Facilities Assistant is responsible for providing custodial services and performing light building maintenance tasks during the afternoon and evening hours. These responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining campus spaces, identifying repair and/or replacement needs, performing minor repairs, assisting with room and event setups, and supporting the overall operations of the Facilities Department.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with occasional overtime. The regular schedule is 11:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. From time to time, especially when school events or special activities are scheduled, there may be a need for occasional weekend coverage or adjusted hours. We do our best to provide advance notice, and we’re looking for someone who is reliable, adaptable, and comfortable shifting their schedule when needed to support the team and the needs of the school.

This staff member reports to the Director of Campus Operations & Technology. The position is classified as an essential employee, which requires the employee to report for work or remain at work to continue plant operations during various emergencies, including but not limited to power outages, snowstorms, and school closures.

Essential Responsibilities

Custodial & Facility Care

  • Clean and maintain classrooms, restrooms, offices, and common areas.
  • Restock supplies and remove trash to ensure spaces remain ready for use.
  • Perform closing routines such as walkthroughs, securing doors/windows, and turning off lights.

Light Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Perform basic repairs (e.g., bulb replacement, tightening fixtures, minor plumbing or carpentry).
  • Identify and report issues needing repair or replacement.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe working condition.

Room & Event Support

  • Set up, reset, and move furniture and equipment for classrooms, meetings, and events.
  • Assist with seasonal projects, summer facilities work, and special activities across the campus.

Coordination & Communication

  • Complete work orders and communicate status updates to the director.
  • Collaborate with facilities, grounds, and security staff to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Attend department meetings and training sessions as required.

Emergency & After-Hours Support

  • Respond to minor building issues or safety concerns during or after shifts when needed.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Regularly operate custodial equipment, hand tools, and light maintenance tools
  • Works in a wide variety of environments as found in all areas of the school
  • The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:
    • ability to lift and manipulate objects of up to 100 lbs, carrying, pushing, and pulling, climbing, and balancing, including climbing ladders for heights up to 40+ feet
    • stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity
    • generally, the job requires 50% walking and 50% standing
    • must be able to work in various adverse conditions, such as tight or enclosed spaces, heights, and temperature extremes, indoors or outdoors, to complete work assignments

Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years of experience in a similar position, preferably at an independent school
  • Proven ability to work equally well as part of a team and individually
  • Ability to read and comprehend written/oral instructions and work requests is necessary
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, 12-month, hourly, non-exempt position. 

Hourly Compensation Range: $18.00-$25.00/hour
